The FLU: Every year, 10% to 20% of Americans
get the flu, a viral infection in the nose, throat and lungs. For most
people, the flu causes fever, cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose,
headache, muscle ache and fatigue. Recovery is usually in 1 to 2
weeks. But for some people, the flu is a more serious illness.
Each year, 130,000 people go to a hospital with the flu, and 20,000 people
die because of the flu or its complications.
What does the FLU cost? In the U.S., the annual
direct medical cost of the flu is estimated to be up to $4.6 billion.
Each year, up to 111 million workdays are lost because of the flu.
Total direct and indirect costs of a severe influenza epidemic can run over
$12 billion.
What does the FLU SHOT save? A 2002
computerized model run by a Stanford investigator found a company can save
an average of $30.00/employee by vaccinating their workplace against the
FLU.
